The eyeballs are resting in the eyesockets, supported by the bones of the sockets. Well, who would have guessed? It sounds so simple and logical, something ‘we all know’. Where else would your eyes be?

Until I came across the following information in a Feldenkrais related publication and it said ‘gravity is pulling your eyeballs into the sockets – when you’re up straight, they ‘lie’ on the bottom, if you lie down, than the eyeballs ‘lie’ in the back of the sockets.

It gave me pause. Where are my eyeballs? What movements am I making with my eyes and the area around them?

Mindful in Motion - moving the eyes with The SelfHealing Movement

I closed my eyes and tuned into the slow rhythm of my breathing. Then I brought my attention to my eyes … to my surprise I was fighting gravity. My eyeballs definitely weren’t in the back of the sockets, I was pushing them forward! Good grace, how had I made that a habitual movement?

I released the muscular tension and sensed how they eyeballs sank back. Immediately my facial muscles relaxed, my jaw opened and a calm feeling spread throughout my body. Wow!

I then practiced moving my eyes without pushing them out of their sockets. The effect on my body and mind was amazing. I’ve created a Mindful Motion for you, so you can try this out for yourself.
